Winter is here

Basic state of me, since I haven't done one of these in a while, cribbed from an email, because, well, I'd written it and it was fine for here, too. :)

I got a cold, then we went away for a week, and then I caught ANOTHER COLD right as I was getting over the first one, so I've spend a total of about three weeks plague-ridden by this point. I'm only just starting to feel human again. I actually did dishes and washing today, so, yay me.

Weather right now is gloriously sunny and really quite cold, especially at night. Last night it got to at least -5C, with Orange (another place nearby and slightly higher altitude) hitting -7C. I know that's not that cold for Chicago, but it's definitely cold enough for me. I could feel the bite when I was hanging the washing out earlier - I can always tell when it's cold enough to snow in Orange. All the condiments in our kitchen have gone strange, as they do when we're in winter. The olive oil is solid in the bottle and won't move even when I shake it upside down. My dishwashing liquid was transparent and has gone completely opaque, like conditioner. The mice have stolen my steel wool AGAIN. (Bastards! No, really, second one they've taken in a month.) My kitchen-cat (too old to bother catching the thieving mice) hasn't shifted from the nest of blankets on the kitchen chair in days, apart from to eat. We bought two fleecy synthetic blankets, and she just cuddled right in, with even her face smooshed in. (I poke her now and again to make sure she's still breathing. She glares at me then buries her face again.)

I may make muesli tomorrow, if Emma doesn't get around to experimenting with some other muesli-ish recipe she's found and wants to try. I made vegetable and chorizo soup yesterday, and we're having something with butternut pumpkin in it for dinner today, maybe pasta, IDK. Otherwise, I am reading fic, knitting a pair of gloves for Brother1 and eating tangelos, because they are divine, only a limited season, and heaven knows I need the vitamin c right now (see:plague). At least we got our flu shot this year.

Jun. 18th, 2015

Haven't been condensing my tabs as I'd like, but that's because I've been mainlining Phryne Fisher mysteries for the last few days. I'd already read Cocaine Blues, The Green Mill Murder, Raisins and Almonds, Murder in the Dark and Murder and Mendelssohn - all completely out of order, mind you - so I've been going through and reading the others in sequential order. I'm partway through Away With The Fairies right now.

*

Been keeping up with the kitchen. It's so nice in there compared to what it was like, and it makes cooking meals and baking so much easier when it's not stacked high with unwashed dishes. If I could only vacuum the floor every couple of days as I want to... but our vacuum cleaner is a trial to use, and we don't have the money to replace it at the moment.

*

Finished knitting shopping bags for the minute. I've started on a simple shawl using some nice acrylic just for something to do while we're away, but haven't decided yet what to do next. Maybe socks, or some more items for the market, or some hats for charity or something.

*

The leatherette case for my phone broke - the clip bit came free of the cover. Some glue may fix it, but I've bought a new one off ebay that should arrive in a couple of weeks. In the mean time, I'm discovering just how slippery my phone is without it. Good thing it's a Nokia; I've dropped it a lot.

Rainy day

Have decided I need flavouring syrups in my life. Chai and white chocolate are top of the list right now. Given I'm living on decaf, I might as well have the small pleasure of it tasting like sweets since I can't handle caffeine any more.

*

Knitting bag number four.

*

No gardening today because it's been raining pretty steadily since last night. Fortunately, we've got some kindling inside, dry, so if we have to start a fire it shouldn't be too much of a pain in the arse.

*

Yesterday I did a bunch of dishes and emptied the bin and the cat litter. Today, the plan is to finish cleaning the bottom of the fridge so I can replace the crisper drawers. Maybe tidy up a bit too if I'm enthusiastic.

*

Condensing tabs is the internet task of today, and maybe cleaning my email inbox a little, since it's ridiculously backlogged and I mean hundreds if not thousands of unread things.

*

Parkin turned out a little too dark on top, but otherwise cooked through and tasty. Next culinary adventure - using up the feijoas and quinces. I've got a saved recipe for Feijoa Chicken Curry that sounds pretty tasty, and we have a packet of pasture-raised chicken drumsticks in the freezer we bought at the Farmer's Market last week. We just need to buy capsicum and allspice and then we can try it out.

Little update and a few more pics

General stuff, garden pics, etc.Collapse )
Fantastic 4 DVDs arrived. Both the two disc editions. We watched the extended cut of the first film, and right now, we're watching through the documentary stuff on the second disc about the comics origins. Lots of Stan Lee and other comics people from the fifty years of history. Finding it very interesting despite having not read any Fantastic 4.

*

Finished Brother2's balaclava. I'm knitting another market bag.

*

Buoyed by my success at making banana and pecan loaf in my dodgy oven, I think I'm going to try making parkin in the same way - cooking in a loaf tin for 3/4 hour, then flipping the tin upside down onto a tray to cook the rest of the way so that the bottom gets done. (Right now, I am working with only a grill element, so the only heat is coming from above. All right when you're making biscuits, not really great for anything any bigger.) The banana loaf was done all the way through, so that bodes well for other recipes with similar baking times/temperatures.

Anyway, I might make that today, or not. I'm thinking pizzas for dinner, though.

*

Got a bunch of pruning done yesterday, which means I've cut back maybe a quarter of the climbing rose, and my hands look like I've been in a fight with a mosquito and a cat and lost. If the weather holds, I'll do more in the next few days.

*

I went to the library, returned Miss Dimple Rallies To The Cause and renewed Miss Match - and then checked, and they had the first books for both series in. So I'm reading Miss Fortune first, and Miss Match can wait.

Reading - Miss Fortune by Sara Mills

I'll be over here sofa-dancing because SEASON TWO OF AGENT CARTER IS A GO! Now, give me a season one DVD set, please.

Swag in the post this week -
Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer Power Cosmic Edition - $10
Black Widow Roller Derby shirt from teefury - $16
Three hanks of 4-ply yarn from the oddment section of space frog - $28
A postcard from the lovely [personal profile] lefaym from Scotland of Harry Potter filming locations

*

On to the second Outside In sock.

*

Done three loads of dishes today. If I do a couple more, then the dishes backlog will be DONE. At least until we eat again.

*

Rewatched a bunch of Sherlock with the aim of finally watching season three. We only have The Reichenbach Fall to go before we're up to new stuff.

Liked Elementary season one. Will definitely seek out seasons two and three when we're in Sydney next, which will probably be next month some time.

Still waiting on Daredevil. Got the first four eps, but I won't watch them until I've got all of them, as I like to watch things back to back.

*

So close to the end of Miss Dimple Rallies to the Cause that I'm calling it done. After a slow, confusing start with too may characters I liked it well enough by the end that I'll probably seek out the first book in the series, Miss Dimple Disappears, which my library is supposed to have.

May

Finished my Cadence socks, and they look gorgeous. Loved the design and the end result looks lovely.

Now just beginning a pair of Outside In socks. I've tried knitting this pattern before and had it come out too tight, but I think that was before I had nice flexible circulars specifically for sock knitting. I'm going to give it a shot, anyhow. I'm using Bendigo Woollen Mills Sock Yarn in Blue Mix, which I'd kinda forgotten we'd bought.

*

Watched a bunch of old films the other day - Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Court Jester and Singin' In The Rain. Then we watched Avengers, Cap 2 and Avengers 2 (I found a watchable cam). Now we're watching Elementary for the first time. Liking it all right so far. I think we're a little under halfway through season one, after which we'll have to watch something else because I don't have any of seasons two or three.

*

Maybe making risotto tonight. Probably the wine based one, though it'll be white wine, not red, because I don't think we have any red in the cupboard.

*

Our neglected garden seems to be doing okay. Still haven't dug out our potato crop, but the lettuces we planted a while back are loving the rain we've had. There are four different varieties, all Asian greens, one of which is a peppery broad leaf with red veining that tastes like radishes. Very hot raw but it mellows when it's cooked or combined with other things.

*

Bought a second hand copy of what was supposed to be the extended edition of Fantastic 4... only for it to be the absolute bog standard edition. Fortunately it was through Fishpond so I get a full refund on returning it. I found the special editions of the first and second films on Ebay instead for under $30 all up, so I've got them coming in the versions I want. They're not perfect films, but they're ones I will rewatch, and they add to my Marvel collection.

*

Still waiting on Daredevil to download. Still waiting for Marvel to announce Agent Carter season two and a season one DVD release. I'm still waiting... *drums fingers*

*

We have apples to use up and if I have enough energy, I may make muffins. Haven't decided yet. I'll have to do dishes first, if I do. Or apple blondies. I don't think I have enough white chocolate for that, though. I'll add it to the shopping list.

*

Still unseasonably warm. We've had two fires, but the last few days we haven't even had the heater on or blankets or layers. Last night, I kept kicking my blanket off because I kept overheating, which is unusual for me. I think it's meant to get colder by Wednesday, but right now, it's sunny, calm and clement outside with tourists wandering around in sunhats, not scarves.

Apr. 26th, 2015

Making Anzac biscuits today. The regular recipe, because we have uncontaminated oats and we haven't had the oat ones for years. For those of you who've never made your own and only eaten shop-bought - you're missing out. For those of you who don't live in the Antipodes and have never had them - you need them in your life. They're super easy to make and delicious. I have two recipes - one regular, one gluten free - up HERE. It took us ten minutes tops from grabbing ingredients to putting a tray in the oven to bake.

*

It's cold, and we have no fire because everything is wet outside, so there's no point trying to collect kindling. We're making do with woollens and our tiny heater.

*

Reading a bunch of fic and enjoying it. Still pretty happy about Age of Ultron. Haven't seen Daredevil yet.

*

Sitting in the armchair because Emma's needed the couch the last few days. Felt a little movement on my shoulder and looked over to see one of our resident mice sitting on it, before it vanished. I'm not afraid of mice, fortunately.

Things and stuff

Done a couple of loads of dishes today. Still pots and trays to go, but I've done all the plates, bowls, cups, cutlery and utensils and some of the plastics. So, not too shabby.

I've finished the gusset decreases on my first Cadence sock. I'm knitting it in a navy blue acrylic baby yarn, and it's looking pretty good so far.

Watching through Earth's Mightiest Heroes again, because I felt like it after Age of Ultron.

Thinking I might do marvel_bang again this year with Emma. I had an idea a while back for a fic that followed on from Captain America: Man Out Of Time by Waid/Molina/Kesel that I never got around to writing that I think I could make into something good. That, or my AU Peggy fic that has been languishing, half-finished, on my computer for months. Gosh I love that thing.

Emma wants more of the muesli I make, so I'll probably do that at some point in the next couple of days.

I'm thinking home made pizzas for dinner tonight. Because pizza.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Where I am in Australia, we actually got it a little early - the posters all said the 23rd, my little cinema showed a 3D screening at 8:30 and a 2D one at 9 on the evening of the 22nd, yesterday. It's so weird, I never get to see anything first, since a lot of films and tv shows take months to get here, and I've never seen things when they first come out anyway. I'm used to coming in when the US and the UK have already been flailing for days if not weeks.

Today

Nausea was better today. Mood generally better, too.

Finished catching up with all the archiving for 221b_recs - six months of recs in two days - so I've got some breathing space, there.

Decided that I'm going to knit for myself for a while. knitty is back up, so I'm working on the second Maeva sock that I began months ago. Might make more socks after I'm done with it - all our first wave of handknit socks seemed to develop holes around the same time last year, and I miss wearing wool. The Jeck socks I made last year seem to be holding up well, though, so I might have to buy more of that wool. It was only about $5 a ball, much cheaper than actual sock yarn.

Did a questionnaire about autism and depression that's going to an autistic person's college work. I figured I was as qualified as anyone to contribute to their data.

State of the me

Trying to hold steady. Better some days than others. I've gone on the pill to try and regulate my hormones, since my pre-period anxiety was completely incapacitating the last few cycles at least. A bit of nausea so far, but I've no idea if that is a side effect or if it's linked to my anxiety, which seems to be worst first thing in the morning right now.

We got through the Easter market okay. Not our all time best, but a decent amount of sales, so that was good. Because I like juxtaposing my craft with my other interests, we have bought ourselves the Sex Criminals hardback and Just The Tips as our reward to ourselves for surviving it. Also arriving at some point, The Less-Than-Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, since we donated to the kickstarter the other month.

Autumn is finally kicking in, with jumpers and extra blankets needed. We haven't lit the fire, yet, though, just used the little heater a few times.

Just finished knitting a commission, a pair of rainbow longies for a woman who bought some things from us at the market, and haven't started anything new yet. I have a half-knit sock, but the pattern is on knitty which for some reason seems to be down, today.

Watching a lot of Q.I., since my tolerance for more stressful stuff is pretty low right now. Reading a lot of fluffy stuff, because when I feel like shit, sometimes I just need to read an adorable baker/wedding planner AU with lots of feelings and food porn.

Might do some pinboard work today for 221b_recs. What with the state of the me, I'm about six months behind.

Borrowed two books on a whim from the library purely because they're lady detective mysteries set during or post-WW2, and I'm missing Peggy Carter. Didn't realise until after I borrowed them that one is marked on the verso as a 'Christian mystery', but I'll give it a shot anyway. Currently reading another Miss Fisher, this one is Murder and Mendelssohn, borrowed from [personal profile] alisso. It has a fairly transparent Sherlock Holmes/John Watson couple of characters, with the 'Sherlock' obviously being the Benedict version. It's amusing, anyway.

Read - Chobits by CLAMP
Reading - Murder and Mendelssohn by Kerry Greenwood
To read - Miss Match by Sara Mills
Miss Dimple Rallies To The Cause by Mingnon F. Ballard
Dirty Magic by Carol Hughes
